What Is Information Security Software?

Information security software protects information and prevents or minimizes the risk of unauthorized access to information throughout the organization’s networks and systems. In order to preserve the integrity and (where required) confidentiality of data processed by software and hardware systems, information security uses a combination of policies, techniques, and hardware devices and software tools. Common information security systems can include one or more of the following: firewall software, intrusion detection and anti-virus tools, support for virtual private networks (VPNs), public key infrastructure (PKI), cryptography, logging, and filtering technologies.

Information Security Software Business Drivers and Benefits

Effective information security systems help you protect your organization in a number of ways:
  • Secure the entire infrastructure of all your enterprise software applications, including related hardware.
  • Establish security practices, and more importantly, enforce user adherence to those policies.
  • Mitigate risk by containing and limiting all threats that could damage core software and hardware information systems and activities.
  • Protect the confidentiality of sensitive corporate information from internal or external threats.
  • Provide secure access to the appropriate enterprise applications for all authorized individuals within the organization.
  • Secure communications between different parties or departments within an organization through the use of electronic data interchange (EDI) and virtual private networks (VPNs) such as intranets and extranets.

Information Security Risks

  • If proper security measures are not incorporated into your IT infrastructure, data breaches may occur through the use of external devices, such as laptops, mobile phones, or personal digital assistants (PDAs).
  • Mismanagement of production and warehouse data can occur if radio frequency identification (RFID) or electronic data interchange (EDI) is not integrated with a security infrastructure.
  • An inability to create logs about network events makes it difficult to identify and analyze intrusions, and to predict potentially threatening events.
  • If levels of access to the data warehouse are not commensurate with information security parameters (such as passwords), there is a risk of unauthorized modification of data, or outright loss of data.
  • If companies do not establish security standards and practices and implement them with information security software, your employees may unwittingly expose you to compliance violations.
